Printed copies for your members: Lulu setup guide
Connect your organization's own Lulu print account in about 15 minutes. Then every member who uses one of your codes can have their personalized playbook printed as a stapled, full-color booklet and mailed to their home, billed to you by Lulu.
What your members get
Each member builds their own playbook, then sends it for printing with one click. It arrives as a US Letter, full-color, stapled booklet on heavy coated paper, with a cover that says "Prepared for" and their name.
- Your Lulu account pays for printing and postage. Members pay nothing, and we never see your payment details.
- One printed copy per member code. Members can still download and print at home as often as they like.
- You choose the shipping: standard mail (cheapest, no tracking) or Priority Mail with tracking.
- You can switch it off any time on your organization page, without disconnecting.
Before you start
Set aside about 15 minutes, plus a few days for your first test booklet if you order a real one. You need:
- Your organization page link (the private link in your welcome email) and its password. The first time you open the link, you create the password; after that you need both. Lost it? Choose "Forgot your password?" on the sign-in page.
- An email address your organization checks, for Lulu's account and our print notices
- A payment card for your Lulu account
- One unused member code to test with (create one on your organization page)
Step by step
Do steps 1 to 5 in Lulu's test system first. Nothing is printed or charged there, so you can try the whole flow safely. Step 6 switches to real printing.
- Create your Lulu test account. Go to developers.sandbox.lulu.com and sign up with your organization's email.
- Copy your test API keys. In that account, open API Keys. You'll see two values: a client key and a client secret. Keep this page open; you'll paste both in step 4.
- Add a payment card. Lulu needs a card on the account to accept print jobs. In the test system, Lulu's test card is fine.
- Connect on your organization page. Open your organization page, sign in with your password, and find Printed copies through your Lulu account.
- Lulu system: Test (sandbox)
- Client key and client secret: paste the two values from step 2
- How copies ship: Standard mail or Priority Mail with tracking
- Tick Let my members order a printed copy, then click Save and connect
- You should see "Connected to Lulu in test mode". If not, see the last section.
- Test it as a member. Use one of your member codes yourself. Build a playbook, download it, fill in a mailing address and click Send for printing. Then check:
- You get an email: "A member's printed playbook went to your Lulu account".
- The job appears in your Lulu test account, with the cover and pages showing correctly in its preview.
- Go live. Create your real account at developers.lulu.com, add your real payment card, and copy its API keys. On your organization page, choose Live, paste the live client key and secret, and click Save and connect. You should see "Connected to Lulu." From now on, members' copies are printed and mailed for real.
Test keys only work with the test system, and live keys only with live. Always change the system and both keys together.
What it costs
A typical 16-page booklet costs about $15 to mail by standard mail, or about $24 with tracked Priority Mail, charged by Lulu to your card.
| Shipping | Booklet (incl. tax) | Postage | Lulu fee | About per copy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard mail, no tracking | $8.50 | $5.69 | $0.75 | $14.94 |
| Priority Mail with tracking | $8.50 | $14.74 | $0.75 | $23.99 |
Prices are Lulu's quote for a 16-page booklet shipped within Arizona on October 16, 2026. Lulu sets them, and they vary with page count, address and sales tax. Most playbooks are 12 to 20 pages.
What your members see
Members never deal with Lulu. From their side it takes about two minutes after their playbook is done.
- They enter your code and build their playbook, as they do today.
- They download it and check it. The printed copy is made from that download.
- A box appears: A printed copy from your organization's name. They type the address to mail it to, a phone number for the delivery driver and, if they like, an email for shipping updates.
- They tick the box agreeing to send it to your printing account, and click Send for printing.
- Lulu prints and mails the booklet. If they gave an email, they're told when it ships, with the tracking number on Priority Mail.
You get an email for every copy sent to your Lulu account, and another if Lulu reports a problem with one.
Privacy
A member's playbook leaves their computer only when they choose to send it for printing, and then it goes to your Lulu account.
- What your Lulu account receives: the booklet's pages and cover, and the member's name, mailing address and phone number, so Lulu can print and ship it. You can see these in your Lulu dashboard, so treat them as member information.
- What we keep: the print files, only until the copy ships (14 days at most), then they're deleted. We keep a short record of the order (reference, status, tracking) for support.
- Your Lulu client secret is stored encrypted and is never shown again, to you or anyone else. To change it, paste a new one, or click Disconnect Lulu.
- We never see your payment details. Lulu charges your card directly.
If something goes wrong
| You see | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Lulu didn't accept that key and secret" | The two values aren't a matching pair, or don't match the system you picked | Copy both again from the same API Keys page. Test keys need Test; live keys need Live |
| "Printing through your own Lulu account isn't switched on yet" | Printed copies aren't enabled for your organization yet | Email jeff@jcady.org and we'll switch it on |
| Members don't see the printed copy box | Printing is off, the account was disconnected, or that code already used its copy | Check Let my members order a printed copy is ticked on your organization page |
| Email: Lulu says UNPAID | Lulu couldn't charge your card | Update the payment card in your Lulu account, then email us to resend that copy |
| Email: Lulu says REJECTED or ERROR | Lulu couldn't print that file | Reply to the email and we'll fix it and send it again |
| A copy never prints, in test mode | The test system never prints | Switch to Live (step 6) when you're ready |
